Creed or Chaos Graduation Honor Roll

31 May, 2008

Today is Westminster Seminary California’s commencement (the speech this year will be from RC Sproul), and CorC’s own CHAOS is graduating!

Phil and Alisia

Phil is still wrapping his head around the wonders of marriage and fatherhood, so he has plenty to keep him busy for the immediate future.

What the rest of us are looking forward to is seeing how the Lord will use the gifts he’s given this finely-sharpened instrument to the honor of his great Name and the service of his church.

Congratulations Phil, and to all the other grads!

My Commencement Speech to Phil and my son Josh who graduated yesterday from Northside Christian High School:

Congratulations Phil and Josh! Enjoy the moment! “Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones; And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.” Psalm 32:11.

Just as our LORD brought you through school to this day of graduation, He will bring you through every challenge. So, don’t worry or be anxious about tommorrow. Celebrate today!

Consistent with this introduction, I will present just three points in this Commencement Speech.

First, the biggest lesson that we need to learn from life is to trust God. You have learned to trust God by the fact of your graduation. You know God helped you through school to graduation. You will also learn to trust God more in the future by tough times where you will not possess what you want (whatever that may be). You will need to have faith. Although no one likes to be without what they want, remember that our faith is more precious than gold and that our faith pleases God. So, in addition to our successes teaching us to trust God, our failures and wants also teach us to trust God.

Second, don’t reserve your happiness just for days like today. Be happy every day. “This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24.

Here is a bonus piece of marital advice for Phil from someone who has been joyfully married for 26 years. This is my best marital advice. I will use my wife’s name to give this advice, but it is good advice for every married man. My wife Theresa has disappointed me at times when I thought how could she act so inconsistent with the good that should be so easy for her to do?! Howwever, on many more occasions, I thought how could Theresa do so good with what is so difficult for her to do?! In summary, we, husbands, need to cut our wives some slack and always remember, “dwell on”, and be thankful for the amazing things that our wives do for us.

Third, this last piece of advice just cleans up everything else. Whatever else you need to know, God will make it known to you. Psalm 16:11 tells us: “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” God even endures with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, so that He can make known to us the riches of His glory upon us, His vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory. Romans 9:22-23. Finally, press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. “Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;” Philippians 3:14-16.

    Yours truly, Phil
    Bill Hornbeck

    Love you Josh!

I think a high school graduation speech is appropriate for Phil on so many levels… πŸ˜‰

Sorry Phil! This is your big day, and I just set you up unintentionally for your buddy Brannan to roast you. I will try to help. Did Brannan give you a graduation gift yet?
